Embalming for Amateurs

Written with the layperson in mind, this fascinating guide describes what goes on behind closed mortuary doors.

How does embalming work? What happens during a cremation? Do bodies really sit up? How are people put back together after traumatic deaths?

A generous helping of honesty and humor make this difficult topic approachable and interesting.

“That was the most informative, complete essay of this subject that I've ever read. I love the little interjections of humor and your complete respect of death and the human body. Thank you for taking the time to educate us flawlessly on such a sensitive subject.”

— Shannon P.

“Thank you for these lessons. Oddly enough they give me so much peace with the passing of friends and family. Obscuring the process for me only amplifies my fear of death and pain brought upon from lost loved ones but reading your lessons brings a transparency to death and that makes it so much easier for me to handle it. It might not be the same for everyone but the more I know, the more I learn the vastness of what I don't know and that thirst for more knowledge gives me life.”

“(Louise) Pachella’s writing is comprehensive and uncluttered. She effortlessly invites the reader into a curious world of taboo and intrigue, offering the detail we yearn for but are too afraid to ask. From eye caps and AV plugs to alkaline hydrolysis, she walks her reader through the whole process of postmortem care, and in doing so, satisfies the hunger that many of us never knew we were craving. An absolute must-read for anyone who wants a professional and respectful insight with a spattering of fun along the way!”
